When it comes to marketing your business, you can compare "Google" to the old Yellow Page Books that you used to receive every year. Companies like Yahoo, Bing, and AOL would be compared to the “other” less popular telephone directories that they dropped off to your home or business, but you did not use very often. (some people used them for high chairs for their kids)
Just like Google is now, the Yellow Pages Book was the primary source people would look to when they were searching for a product, service or business. In the old days, if your business was not listed in the Yellow Pages you would be at an extreme disadvantage over your competition. The companies that placed the biggest ad’s, most colorful, and had the best placement in the book, were the companies that received the most calls from the Yellow Page Books. The same thing is true with Google and the other search engines.
You may also remember that the Yellow Page Books were divided up into territories such as cities or counties so that people searching would only see ad’s and companies that were both relevant and local to their area. Again, the same thing happens with Google and the other search engines. Google knows your location, and shows you only relevant results in your local area.
Finally do you remember when you were searching the Yellow Pages for a business? Many times a business would show up in several different places within the book. For example, if you were getting a divorce and need help, you might search in the “Divorce” section of the book, or “Attorney’s” or “Lawyer” or “Legal”. If you were searching for a security system you might find similar ad’s in the following sections: “Security Alarm” “Home Security” “Alarm System” “Burglar Alarm” “Security System”. Google and the other search engines work the same way. In today’s day, we call these “Keywords”.
In the age of computers and more importantly mobile devices such as cell phones, being found on the Web is the only real place to be.
